The new Oura ring is all about you: it measures the physiological signals of your body, understands your lifestyle, and guides you to make your own optimal daily choices. That’s why it’s loved by devoted users in over 50 countries.

The Oura ring features scientifically validated sleep tracking and personalized guidance based on data from over a million nights and days.

The Science Behind Oura

The Oura ring and its proprietary algorithms are a combination of extensive scientific understanding, years of careful research and development work, and top-notch engineering.

All insights and guidance you get are based on proven algorithms and verified knowledge. For example, Oura’s sleep staging algorithms were the first in the market that have been independently validated. The validation study was made by SRI International. Oura’s activity metrics promote daily physical activity and regular weekly moderate to high intensity exercise, in accordance to the position statement of American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine.

The Oura ring measures your body signal data with three types of sensors:

Infrared LEDs
3D accelerometer and gyroscpe
NTC body temperature sensor
Infrared LEDs
The infrared LEDs of the Oura ring access blood volume pulse (BVP) directly from the palmar arteries of the finger, with similar technology as, for example, the pulse oximeters used in hospitals.

The light sensor of the ring capture 250 samples per second for a constant flow of reliable data. The ring detects the pulse waveform and amplitude variation, and exact time between heartbeats, i.e. interbeat interval (IBI). From these, it derives your heart rate, respiratory rate, and heart rate variability (HRV), and other sleep staging related parameters.

3D Accelerometer and Gyroscope
The Oura ring tracks your movement with its precise 3D accelerometer and gyroscope. It automatically detects the amplitude and intensity of your body movement, automatically recognizes that you’re active and tracks the time you were inactive during the day. The 3D accelerometer captures samples at the rate of 50 Hz.

Body Temperature Sensor
The Oura ring registers your body temperature reading every minute while you sleep. It detects automatically the time when your skin temperature corresponds to your body temperature. By comparing that value to values from earlier nights, it indicates your body temperature baseline and any variations from it.

Oura Body Temperature Tracking article tells more about how the Oura ring tracks body temperature deviation.

24⁄7 Tracking with the Oura Ring
The Oura ring is designed to be unobtrusive. It can be worn continuously, so it follows your activities and resting periods 24⁄7. The ring knows when it’s on your finger, so you don’t need to do anything but wear it.

In summary, the body signals which the Oura ring measures are:

Pulse waveform
Body temperature
The signals the Oura ring processes are:

Interbeat interval (IBI)
Pulse amplitude variation (related to blood pressure variation)
ECG level resting heart rate (RHR)
Heart rate variability (HRV)
Respiratory rate
Movements, intensity of physical activity
Body temperature deviation
These signals have been internally validated against golden standard methods. The thorough testing and development of its technology is a source of pride for the entire Oura team, as its use at the foundation of the Oura promise – helping people lead better, healthier lives – is backed by the scientific rigor worthy of leading an industry.
